Frequently Asked Questions X

Do you offer fire science degrees?

Although we are part of the University of Nevada, Reno, the FSA is not a degree issuing institution. FSA courses support the needs of Industrial Emergency Responders. Unlike the individual degree based programs that comprise the University's core curriculum, Fire Science Academy courses are not offered on a semester basis, but rather are "training based" and made available at various times throughout the year. Each course offered has a course cost associated with it. Some of the courses we offer do not have a prerequisite requirement. Some of the more advanced courses do require that you complete the entry level course(s) in that area of training. To review the upcoming courses at the FSA, please review our class schedule information available on this Web site.

What is a Continuing Education Unit or CEU?

Continuing education refers to specialist courses to update professionals. These are regular courses or training designed to bring professionals up-to-date with the latest developments in their particular field. The Continuing Education Unit or CEU provides individuals with recognition for their efforts to update or broaden their knowledge
or skills through participation in continuing education activities.

Where are you located?

The FSA is located in Carlin, NV. Carlin is approximately half-way between Salt Lake City, UT (250 miles to the east) and Reno, NV (270 miles to the west) on Interstate 80. Click here for directions, maps, and lodging information.

How do I register for classes at the FSA?

You may either take advantage of our online registration system through this Web site, or you may print off the PDF file provided on this Web site of our registration

Do you offer student housing?

The FSA does not offer student housing on campus. The majority of our students stay in Elko, NV which is located 25 miles east of the FSA campus. Students are responsible for arranging their own transportation to and from the FSA for training.

Do you have scholarships for training?

As a general rule, the FSA does not offer scholarships. From time-to-time, we do receive funding to provide scholarships for specific areas of interest. Scholarship programs that become available will be announced on here on the site, our Facebook page and through our e-newsletter.

What does the course fee cover?

For individual courses, the fee covers your enrollment in the class, any student handbooks or study books required for the course, and lunch each day of training. Additional optional fees include use of FSA PPE (example, use of FSA bunker gear or rescue gear) and fees for CEU's.

How long does it take to complete a course at the FSA?

Most FSA courses are 40-hour certification courses (5 days, 8 hours per day). Some of the specialized courses are only 24-hour (3 days, 8 hours per day) or 32-hour (4 days, 8 hours per day) courses. The required course hours are listed within the information pages for each course.

Do I have to be sponsored by a company to attend courses at the FSA?

No. FSA courses are open to any student who meets the prerequisites for the specific course of interest.

I am an international student who will need to obtain a visa to attend training.
How do I do that?

For those international students who do not already possess a travel visa, they will need to make arrangements with the local US Consulate to obtain a B-1 visa (Business/Tourist). The Fire Science Academy can provide a letter of invitation for the student, but we cannot intervene on the student's behalf during the interview process.

How should I travel to the FSA?

Most of our "local" area students drive to the Carlin, NV area for training. Students from locations a little further away will either fly into the Elko Area Regional Airport or into either Salt Lake City or Reno and drive from one of these two locations to the Carlin area. The drive from Salt Lake City or Reno is approx. 4 hours. Click here for directions, maps, and lodging information.

How do I signup to receive your e-newsletter?

When is the Fire Science Academy closing?

There are no plans to close the Fire Science Academy in the forseable future. The Fire Science Academy, working with our stakeholders and the University, is currently in the process of executing a multi-tiered plan that will position the FSA for growth and success for many years to come.

When is the National Guard taking over the Fire Science Academy?

The Nevada National Guard will not be assuming ownership of the Fire Science Academy. This was never discussed between the Guard and the University. The Guard unit based in Elko is in the process of finalizing an opportunity to co-locate with the FSA sometime in 2011. This co-location will offer both the Nevada National Guard unit based in Elko and the FSA with multiple opportunities to take full advantage of the facility here in Carlin.

Are you still offering the grant funded Flammable Liquids fire fighting course?

Unfortunately, the federal funding for this course was discontinued. We are working with our Federal partners to try to obtain an additional funding source that will allow us to continue offering this training. When we have an update regarding this training program, we will post the announcement on this site and our Facebook page.
