Course Description

Hazardous Materials Chemistry

OSHA and other leaders in the field of hazardous materials recommend that emergency response organizations supplement mandatory training for their personnel. This 24-hour course, targeted to hazardous materials technicians, incident commanders, and health, safety and environmental managers who wish to advance their skill and knowledge, provides an advanced-level of training and practical knowledge of the chemistry of hazardous materials, including an understanding of properties, hazards and control measures to increase responder safety and success. Classroom instruction addresses chemical and physical properties of hazardous materials; periodicity, ionization, molecular formation; salts and nonsalts; hydrocarbons and their derivatives; organic and inorganic chemicals and liquefied gases. Students should have a good understanding of the basic properties of chemicals before enrolling in the course.

For acceptance to this course, students must meet the prerequisite of attending the FSA HAZWOPER 40-Hour/Hazardous Materials Technician course or have received equivalent training.
