Course Description

NWCG S-231 Engine Boss / Single Resource

This 16-hour course is targeted to personnel desiring to be qualified as an engine boss (ENGB). This training meets the requirements for NWCG S-231. This is a skill course designed to produce student proficiency in the performance of duties associated with engine boss, single resource (ENGB). Topics include engine and crew capabilities and limitations, information sources, fire size-up considerations, tactics, and wildland/urban interface. Students will be able to perform the tasks of an engine boss in making the tactical decisions required to safely manage an engine on an incident.

For acceptance to this course, students must be qualified as a Wildland Firefighter I (FFTI), show successful completion of Intermediate Wildland Fire Behavior (S-290) and successful completion of Crew Boss/Single Resource (S-230).

Upon successful completion of course and subsequent position task book, students will receive the FSA NWCG-compliant Red Card displaying updated qualifications.
